Database disabled

Posted in News at 8:14 pm by Phil

Arrgh! After the latest update to the website the database grew too big for the server! I have now had to cut down the size of the database by moving a few things around.

I am taking this opportunity to revamp the scripts in an effort to make them a little more efficient and so I’m afraid there will be occasions when the website is temporarily inactive as I fiddle with my bits!

I am also working on a totally new look for the site but that is a long way off at the moment.

Please bear with me while I try to sort things out and if the site appears not to be working just wait a wee while and try a refresh.

If you find an error on a particular page that you think I may have missed please let me know.

Thanks for your patience.

1911 Census Update

Posted in Census, News at 7:59 pm by Phil

I have now updated all the existing 1911 Census reference numbers in an effort to be a little more consistent!

In time, all the 1911 Census information I have accumulated will be published on the website. I am very grateful to everyone who has contributed information and images. I still have the mammoth task of adding the remainder of the 1200 images I acquired during the free sessions from findmypast. Some of these images will be not be associated with anyone in the Williams Family Tree and so I will create a new page to list them in case someone else would like them.

1911 Census – Success!

Posted in News at 6:57 am by Phil

After the initial letdown from findmypast I discovered by accident (should of read their blog!) that they changed their free access to a 90 minute period any time on the day of an England match.

Using my method of saving the links of my searches to a web page and then hitting the findmypast records from that page I managed a total of 1200 images in all!

I have now updated the software on the site to accommodate the 1911 census data and images and they will be appearing in due course.

After the First Free Access to the 1911 Census

Posted in Census, News at 10:53 am by Phil

Well, what a let down! There was obviously a huge demand put on the servers for the free access to findmypast.co.uk that many people ended up with nothing! I was lucky enough to grab nearly 40 images and have added the data from most of them into the database.

To view the results go to the search box and enter ‘RG14′ for either the ‘Source’ or the ‘Individual’:-

A list of the 1911 Censuses I now have can be seen here.

A list of all the people on them can be viewed here.

Let’s hope we all have better luck for the next session …

Findmypast is free during every England World Cup match. All records available using their Full subscription (including the 1911 Census) will be free: Living Relatives searches and Memorial scrolls are not included.

So, if you don’t want to watch the match, get researching!!

No more ‘News’

Posted in News at 11:18 am by Phil

I have decided to delete the ‘Latest News’ items from the front page of the Williams Family Tree website and report everything in the Blog instead.

Oops!

The database was blocked due to “high resource usage” and I fear the culprit was my little ‘ticker’ in the W-F-T Toolbar so I have disabled it.

GRO Petition

Posted in News at 6:25 pm by Phil

As you may be aware, the costs of GRO certificates will rise from £7 to £9.25 on the 6th April. Costs haven’t risen for some years but an extra £2.25 on every certificate. That’s a whopping 32% rise. GRO produces 2 million certificates a year, so that’s 4.5 million extra profit in one swoop. 90% of applications are online now, so their work is reduced but we pay more! They are even scrapping the “checking points”, so no more refunds if it’s not the correct certificate.

Although protesting will probably fall on deaf ears, if we stay quiet, they will think they can hike the costs up whenever they want to. At least we can express how we feel about it. If you agree, please copy and paste the link below into your browser and sign the e-petition.

The above was posted to the Glamorgan Rootsweb List (and probably a few others). I am just passing it on.
